San Juan Art Galleries

If art is what moves you, head straight to Old San Juan. As a matter of fact, Old San Juan itself can be considered a master piece of art with its historic buildings, panoramic views, and all of the sculptures that are found at plazas, at Paseo La Princesa and at the streets of Old San Juan.

But if you want to see or buy individual art pieces, you won’t be disappointed at the variety of art galleries that you can find in San Juan. While there are countless of them in the entire San Juan area, your best bet is to visit those in Old San Juan.

Art exhibitions in Old San Juan include sculptures, arts and crafts, contemporary arts, fine arts, and those that reflect the Caribbean and Latin American culture. The majority of San Juan art galleries feature local artists, but you can also find international artists.

Noches de Galería (Gallery Nights)

The first Tuesday of each month, Old San Juan celebrates its Noches de Galería (Gallery Nights). Noches de Galería is an event in which San Juan art galleries and other museums open their doors starting at 8:00 pm until early in the morning offering music and refreshments like wine and cheese. This event is a favorite for locals and visitors, a taste of the great nightlife that Old San Juan offers.

Words of Advice:

Noches de Galería is a cultural event, or at least it is supposed to be. But many people, especially young people, “abuse the system” and use this event as an excuse to hang out until the late night/morning hours at the streets and pubs of Old San Juan.

If you enjoy art and you don’t mind crowds, then this event is perfect for you. But if you don’t like crowds, then I suggest you go early and leave at around 10:00 pm because that is when the streets start getting packed.

Below is a list of some of the art galleries that are found in San Juan.

As you can see, several of them are located at Cristo and Fortaleza Streets. Therefore, I recommend you start on either one of those two streets and cover all of those at once. You can then stop by the ones at the other streets later on as you go.

If you don’t want to spend too much time visiting art galleries, at least go to Galería Botello, as it is one of the most popular ones and one that displays a collection of santos (saints), which have been traditionally handcrafted in Puerto Rico for years.
